The Shetland duck is a breed of domestic duck originating in the Shetland Islands^[1] in Scotland.^[2] It is critically endangered.^[3]

History

The Shetland duck is thought to have evolved from the Pomeranian duck or Swedish Blue duck, due to its similar appearance. It is thought that the Vikings brought the Shetland to Britain.^[1]^[4]

Characteristics

The Shetland duck is a small, hardy breed. It is similar to Pomeranian duck or Swedish Blue duck, it shares the same ancestors with them. It is black with a white bib. They typically have blue bills. The average weight of the Shetland duck is 2 kg for males and 1.8 kg for females. Ducklings are dark brown with buff breasts

Diet

The Shetland duck is able to eat seeds as well as bugs and microbes.
