History

Founded in 1999 by the visionary Engineer Ken Mbiuki, the university has developed from a single course centre of education to become a major force in the areas of science and technology. Established as Zenith Technologies, the institution quickly lived up to the true meaning of the word Zenith (the peak or the very best) to become a leading centre for Information Communication and Technology and Engineering tertiary education. Driven by huge demand for higher education in the country, the college transitioned to Zetech College, keenly broadening areas of specialization to include Business, Hospitality, Media and Developments studies under its pouch. Today, Zetech University is robustly equipping graduates with skills to invent new technologies for the future. The quality of our education continues to build on our reputation as a centre for excellence. At Zetech University, students experience some rare opportunities to prepare for their future careers. Campuses

With thousands of students studying various programmes, Zetech has established four fully equipped campuses to cater to the educational needs of the growing student base from around the world. The University main campus (Thika Road Campus) is a state of the art facility located along the Thika Super Highway.

The other three campuses are located in Nairobi’s Central Business District:

Our Facilities

Zetech University boasts of modern and relevant facilities. Our centres of education are fully equipped with modern student facilities for the provision of wholesome education. Our campuses are expertly constructed to serve as hubs for teaching, research, administration and social activities. They include spacious and naturally lit lecture halls with a capacity of between 75 – 150 students, modern and fully digitalized libraries, a 400 seater Amphitheatre. Zetech is home to a top class electrical engineering hub, first class radio and TV studios equipped with elaborate editing suites to provide students with a platform to communicate while learning the basics of working in the expansive media industry. Our buildings are environmentally friendly as they have been built to utilize natural light during the day and also operate on a biological waste management system in a bid to utilize all its water resources and hence lead from the front on efforts towards environment conservation.

Library Resources

One of the key facilities underpinning the success of knowledge creation and dissemination are the university libraries. The library supports the learning and research activities of the university through provision of responsive, dynamic services that meet the changing information needs of a diverse Zetech community. Library services aim at being an indispensable partner in the delivery of university programmes and seek to motivate all genuine and diligent seekers of knowledge to voraciously and incrementally expand the nation’s pool of knowledge in ways that will offer solutions to contemporary challenges of the modern world. Our libraries are equipped with fast broadband connection to enable student undertake research from a global point of view. This is further complimented by well equipped multi-media centres which provide students with informational resources from around the world to give them a fundamental global perspective approach in their studies.

University Management

Chancellor- Prof. Susan Alfano Nkinyangi

Prof. Nkinyangi is an international expert in education and public policy. She has served for over 30 years in different regions of the world as senior adviser, technical expert in international, regional and national initiatives on education and development. Prof. Nkinyangi has extensively worked with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) based at Paris, France; Pretoria, South Africa; Dakar, Senegal; and Nairobi, Kenya 1980 - 2009. Among her roles while at UNESCO included Senior Education Adviser, UNESCO Nairobi responsible for education programs, projects and activities covering Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda between July 2001 - 2009. Senior Education Adviser UNESCO Dakar, Senegal, responsible for Education for All (EFA) and HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Africa 2000-2001. Senior Education Adviser in Pretoria, South Africa responsible for UNESCO's education program 1998 - 2000. Senior Program Specialist, UNESCO, Paris, France, responsible for UNESCO's global work in basic education, health and nutrition in partnerships with educational, scientific and international development communities, 1989-1998. Program specialist responsible for nutrition and health education in 1982-1988 and Science Sector Consultant, Research and Human Needs Program in 1980-1981. Prof. Nkinyangi holds a Ph.D from Monash University Medical School (Melbourne, Australia) and Masters in Science Biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA, USA). She has published extensively on policy development, research and studies; resource mobilization and technical cooperation; and advocacy, networking and linkages. Other notable publications include Second Fact Book on Education.” UNESCO, Challenges of implementing free primary education in Kenya: Experiences from the Districts" UNESCO.

Vice Chancellor – Prof. Edwin K. Wamukoya The VC, Prof. Edwin K. Wamukoya joined ZETECH in January 2012 from Kenyatta University where he served for over 25 years in teaching and administrative positions. At Kenyatta University, Prof. Wamukoya served in various capacities as: Chairman of the Department of Physical and Health Education; Director of the Institute of Kinesiology and Leisure Management; Director, Bureau of Training and Consultancy; Director Institute of Open Learning; Director Mombasa Campus and finally, Director, Ruiru Campus. He has also served as the Honorary Secretary for Kenversity Cooperative Savings and Credit Society for a period of 10 years and a Trustee of the Kenyatta University Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme for 6 years. Prof. Wamukoya holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Manchester (UK), a Masters Degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Curriculum Development from Kenyatta University and a Bachelors of Education Degree from the University of Nairobi. Prof. Wamukoya is a member of various professional organizations and has travelled widely. He has been published in refereed journals. Prof. Wamukoya has several University and International awards to his credit.



Accreditation

The journey towards accreditation to university status began in 2007, when the institution developed a strategic plan that aimed at commencing to provide university education in seven years time. In 2014, Zetech underwent numerous quality auditing which successfully resulted in full university accreditation by the Commission for University Education in August 2014 after satisfying the institution has adequate physical, human, library and financial resources, viable relevant academic programmes and sound structure of governance. The university continues to meet the standards of academic excellence set by the Commission.

Our Student Life

1.	Student Governance

The Zetech University student union body is governed by the Zetech University Students' Association (ZUSA) which provides student representation within and outside the institution. The association serves as an instrumental in bridging the gap between the university administration and students and plays a critical role in representing the needs of the students. It also serves as an opportune platform for students to learn and develop skills related to leadership and service to the community.

2.	Clubs and Societies

Zetech University’s emphasis is not only in academic excellence but also on personal growth in other fronts. Through the Executive Director of Student Affairs office, the University operates an elaborate programme aimed at equipping graduates with life skills, ready to spot and take up opportunities in the society.

The approach to blending the skills learned in class with social ways of life is through a vibrant co-curricular menu that includes IT Club, Engineering Club, Journalism Club, Arts Club among others. The Arts Club that houses the drama club has over the years brought great recognition to the university having won several awards in national drama competitions, filling the university trophy cabinet with a large number of accolades. Our approach is blending the skills learned in class with social ways of life through a vibrant co-curricular menu.

3.	Sports 

As part of a vibrant co-curricular set of choices for the social development of our students, Zetech University has invested greatly in the development of sports activities for students. The University Sports department strongly encourages the discovery and promotion of Sporting talents and it is a great way to nurture hobbies and turn these into professional skills. The football and basketball teams in place have worked tirelessly to make a name in the Kenyan university leagues having clinched several titles that serve as motivation for students with potential. Other sporting activities that students heavily engage in include Rugby, Netball and Chess. The football team is the reigning Universities and Colleges Football Leagues champions having also won the trophy in 2011 and 2012 seasons. The university Basketball team is the reigning DSTV Kenya Basketball Federation Division One champions and have are now playing in the national men’s Kenya Basketball Federation League along other talented top flight teams.

4.	Student Placement 

The University has established a dynamic student placement office tasked with addressing pre-employment and employment needs of the graduating students and alumni. Placed under the academic affairs unit of the administration, this office facilitates student entrepreneurship and life skills training and employment networking. Also, students are advised and assisted in job placement, industrial attachment, volunteer- ship and alumni networking.

Key services available from the Placement Office

I. Job Vacancies The Placement office networks with organizations and receives information regarding job openings for students and alumni. The students are linked up with potential employers. Very year, tens of students are placed in various leading organizations in the country.

i. Practical seminars Every semester, the office schedules practical seminars at departmental levels where students are addressed by renowned professionals and industry practitioners. These seminars are aimed at reinforcing students’ knowledge of their discipline of study and equipping them with skills that give them a competitive edge in the job market.

ii. Job search skills, cover letter and CV/resume writing training Through the placement office all students have an opportunity to receive training in these mentioned areas. This is a continuous exercise that is done at academic group/class levels. Emphasis is placed on students about to complete their training (final semester students). It helps the students make high quality CVs/resumes and cover letters giving them a competitive their peers. The training also eliminates employment barriers and sharpens students’ job search strategies.

iii. Academic Field trips At Zetech University; it is policy to integrate lecture lessons with practical academic field trips for all students. The trips are designed guide our students to interact with the curriculum, clarify thinking, synthesize information and also motivate them in the learning process. Placement office coordinates academic field trips in all schools and disciplines.

iv. Mock Interview This is undertaken by students who are just about to complete their training. Mock Interviews are done with the help of internal and external resource persons to better prepare the students for actual job interviews by subjecting students to actual job interview processes.

v. Students/alumni CV Data Bank This serves as a tool which the office uses to link continuing students and graduates with organisations which are in need of potential new graduates to fill new job openings.

vi. Alumni networking All our students are by extension members of the Zetech alumni association. The office ensures that alumni remain connected with the university and linking them up to beneficial employer and old students networking.

vii. Internships/Industrial training Internship is a monitored work experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and it mostly takes place in an industrial site. It helps the intern integrate knowledge and theory with field experience. It is a vital step in career development hence compulsory to all Zetech University students. The placement office prepares the students for internship by building their capacity on how to look for internship sites. At Zetech University, we understand that productive Industrial Trainings help students make informed decisions and improve their marketability after graduation.

5.	Student Magazine

The journalism students are provided with a platform to use their skills and knowledge in the development of content for a student magazine. Zetech Connect is a Bi-Monthly English student magazine designed especially for students, graduates and professionals and largely developed by students. The magazine is one of the most successful products from the student fraternity and the publication is a quality creation that seeks to promote distinction in student journalism through student reporting, editing and design. Zetech Connect has served as a principal stepping stone for alumni who have ended up doing extremely well in leading media houses, publishing firms and other communications related careers.

6.	Health and Counseling 

The university has put up a Health and Counseling Centre which operates as a single service provider for professional medical and counseling services to students. The facility is opened and available for use from 8am to 6pm. It has been purposefully equipped to handle emergencies such as chest pain, seizures, injuries e.t.c. outside and within the campus.

Zetech University Alumni

Zetech University Alumni Association is a non-profit organization that was founded in the year 2010. The Association is currently volunteer-led and is coordinated by Zetech University Placement Office and a team of elected officials. The University emphasizes the commitment of the Alumni Association to serve and involve alumni in the life of the institution. Through this involvement, Zetech continues to grow stronger and better serve its students, alumni and the greater society. The university strongly believes that the alumni are a pillar in the growth and expansion of Zetech locally and internationally.

Corporate Social Responsibility

The university is keen towards developing the communities in the areas that we operate in. Towards this, the university through the CSR engagement office has ensured consistent participation through the headlining and involvement of activities designed to empower communities to economic sustenance, environmental conservation, health and community engagement. At Zetech, we understand the most important thing for any organization is to impact the society towards embracing each other and undertaking community projects in unity. That’s why, the CSR programme in particular has been designed to focus and involve students and the youth as way to impart to them the benefit of giving back and the virtue of community teamwork towards solving common society challenges.

Student Support Services

I. Student Learning Centre

The student learning centre has been established to provide students with support in select areas of their course work such as English, Mathematics and computer skills. The centre has been designed to encourage students to engage actively and critically in the learning process.

II. Student Computing Support

The campus is fitted with over 10 computer labs all equipped with computer hardware, software and work space to all students, regardless of major and on a walk-in basis. The Computing Support desk in each laboratory provides technical support and troubleshooting assistance to students experiencing problems with their machines as well assistance to students on how best to accomplish particular computing tasks.

III. iZetech - Student Portal

The student portal is a central resource for students to access information on academics and other university aspects. All students are allocated a student email address and log in credentials where they are able to check exam timetable and results, library borrowing, access careers and accommodation information as well as follow University news and activities.

IV. Student Health and Counseling Centre

The Health and Counseling Centre operates as a single service providing professional medical and counseling services to students. The centre is opened from 8am to 6pm. It is equipped to handle emergencies from outside and on campus.

V. Student Disability Support

Zetech University welcomes applications from disabled students. The campus has been built with the disabled in mind. Special ramps and elevators have been put up for the disabled to access top floors.

Our Achievements

• Our university sports teams have consistently excelled at the highest level of competition nationally. This is because of our strong emphasis in sports that aims at enabling our students learn Teamwork, rewards of Hard Work, Self Discipline and skills to handles competitive situations. • The university is the reigning Universities and College Football League champions having previously won the title in 2011 and 2012. • In basketball, we are the reigning Division One DSTV Kenya Basketball Federation League Champions. The team has consequently qualified to play in the national KBF men’s premier league along other notable teams. • The University Drama Team is a national force in drama and music performances. The team registered the highest number of trophies won by an individual institution at the Kenya National Drama Festivals in 2014 after scooping 13 trophies at the fete.

Our student’s modeling prowess has been outstanding nationally. The university’s annual Mr and Miss Zetech pageant has provided a formidable stepping stone for many of our students’ entry into modeling and fashion design.

Miss Universe Kenya Gaylene Ayugi. She represented Kenya in the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant in Florida USA. • Miss Kenya 1st Runners up Lucy Wangechi. She is also the reigning Miss Kirinyaga County. • Miss Siaya County Celestine Awuor. She’s also a finalist in the 2014 Miss Kenya national finals.

Talent and Entrepreneurship

Through the university’s entrepreneurial mentorship programme, our students have tapped the power of their natural talents to make successful careers and venture into thriving enterprises.

Ashok Sunny, Professional Model and Fashion designer / Mr Zetech 2012-2013. His knack for business has blended well with his passion for modeling and fashion design enabling him set up a thriving fashion store, Ashok Creations in Nairobi's CBD. • Creative and talented one-man band Joshua Kamau, also known as "Krack Wizz", has thrived in the Kenyan music performing arena with a captivating style of music which has made him a star attraction in public ceremonies and music festival events. • Kevin Makanga also known as 'Ken Tout’ is a gifted runway model and a creative choreographer and has made a name for himself in the fashion world in Kenya. Having kicked off his stint in modelling as a participant in the Mr and Miss Zetech pageant of 2012 securing the First Runners Up spot, he has since achieved a lot and is well known in the country as a model and choreographer having trained models for the East Africa Fashion Week, Moi University Beauty Pageant (2014) as well as launching designers such as Couture by Maggy. Kevin has been featured as a model and choreographer in local daily newspapers and TV shows and is at the peak of his career.

In Sports

The University’s commitment and investment in sports has attracted renowned names to join the university. This includes securing the services of former Kenya international and ex-Tusker FC tactician Sammy Omollo as the new head coach. Omollo, who won the KPL title with Tusker in 2010.Apart from winning the KPL title with Tusker FC, he won the inaugural Kenya Charity Cup as well as the DSTV Super Eight series with Tusker, the Moi Golden Cup with Pipeline FC as well as lifting Mahakama FC from lower division to premiership in 2003. He also held a one year coaching stint with Sony FC in 2012.

Star Made in Zetech – Jeremy Yongo Jeremy is a phenomenal basketball player and one of the best promising player in the game in Kenya’s top flight league. Since joining the university team, Jeremy has transformed into a dependable accomplisher for the team and is today a star in the Kenya Basketball League. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the 2014 DSTV Kenya Basketball Federation League.

University Social Events

Mr & Miss Zetech The University holds the annual Mr. and Miss Zetech University Pageant, the most anticipated student’s Pageantry in the country. This is made possible in partnership with prominent events management organisations which give it a professional and national outlook, hence ensuring delivery of a glamorous gala night that lives to all the hype associated with it.

Talent Show The University also holds an annual talent gala show every year, dubbed the Zetech Talent Show. It’s one of the most looked after event in all the campuses as it not only brings all the students together, but also serves to launch careers in the art scene such as music and dance.

Campus Hangout The events is a one day fun filled event held once a semester that aims at welcoming the new incoming students as well as celebrate student talent and special skills. The event also incorporates special speaker guests from various sectors. The event has a minimum turnout of 4,000 students.


Graduation

The university conducts a colourful graduation ceremony every August. Our approach is to ensure that when students graduate from Zetech University they will be educated and ready to effect real change in the world. They will be global citizens fully equipped and ready to make positive impact.
