VyOS is a fork of the now defunct Vyatta Core edition of routing software. VyOS is a GNU/Linux-based routing solution built on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution, and currently runs on x86 and x86-64 platforms.[1]

VyOS provides a free and open source routing platform that competes directly with other commercially available solutions from well known network providers. Because VyOS runs on standard x86 systems, it is able to be used as a router and firewall platform for cloud deployments.[2]

History

After Brocade Communications stopped development of the Vyatta Core Edition of the Vyatta Routing software, a small group of enthusiasts took the last Community Edition, and worked on building an Open Source fork to live on in place of the end of life VC.[3][4]

Releases

VyOS version 1.0.0 (Hydrogen) was released on December 22, 2013.[5][6] On October 9, 2014 version 1.1.0 (Helium) was released.[7] All versions released thus far have been based on Debian 6.0 (Squeeze), and are available as a 32-bit images and 64-bit images for both physical and virtual machines.[6]

Keeping with the naming convention the next release will be Lithium.
