The burning of St. Sava's remains

The burning of St. Sava's remains is one of the Serbian Orthodox Church's religious holidays. The body of Saint Sava is buried in the Mileševa monastery. During the Turkish rule, the people gathered around the remains of their saint, in the hope of finding consolation. Fearing a rebellion rising against the Turks at the site which the remains were located at,  Sinan Pasha of Belgrade ordered the remains to be transferred to Belgrade and burned, at Vračar, on the 27th of April(10th of May), year 1594. However, by burning the remains of the saint, he managed to raise the awareness of the Serbian people about their position in the Empire and only shortened the time before a rebellion rose.

The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates this holiday on the 27th of April by the church calendar, and on the 10th of May by the Gregorian calendar.
