Sumut is the debut album of Greenlandic rock band Sume. It was released in 1973 on the Danish record label Demos.
Allegedly the album was purchased by 20 percent of the Greenlandic population becoming an important part of the Greenlandic movement for cultural independence of Denmark.[1] The band was inspired by American rock, but sang in the Greenlandic language and their lyrics were progressive and critical of the Danish colonial power.
Cover art
The cover showed a reproduction of a woodcut made by the artist Aron of Kangeq in 1860 that depicts a scene from Greenlandic myth in which the legendary figure Qasapi has just cut the arm of the dead body of the Norsemen chief Uunngortoq [2]
