Shawkat Hashmi (Bengali: শওকত হাশমী) is a Bangladeshi-born British radio presenter and producer who works for the BBC as ethnic affairs producer and presenter for BBC North, BBC Radio Sheffield and BBC Asian Network.

Early life

Hashmi was born in Barisal, Barisal District, Barisal Division, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He attended Barisal Zilla School, studied at Bangladesh University of Professionals, read Journalism and Media Studies at Cardiff University, and Mechanical and Production Engineering at the University of Sheffield.[1]

Career

Hashmi was introduced to presenting through hospital radio after spending in a hospital ward due to a serious knee injury. In January 1992, he joined the BBC and became a senior producer and presenter for BBC North.[2][3] He produces and organises Asian programmes for BBC Radio Sheffield and BBC Asian Network.[1][4]
