North Tyneside General Hospital is part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital is situated on the A191 in North Shields and is the largest of the Trust's three general hospitals.

North Tyneside is a district general hospital with 24 hour walk-in services for urgent care, full range of diagnostic testing, outpatient clinics covering a range of specialties, as well as facilities for care of the elderly. [1]

History

It was built between 1984 and 1996 with gradual extensions, and replaced several other hospitals including the Tynemouth Infirmary and Preston Hospital. It is often referred to locally as the Rake Lane Hospital.

It serves a population of about 250,000 in North Tyneside and Northumberland.

The hospital's Accident and Emergency Department is now a 24-hour walk-in centre, following the opening of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in 2015.

Patients requiring maxillofacial, burn and plastic specialist surgery are generally referred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. Patients requiring neuro-surgical care are usually referred to Newcastle General Hospital. Patients requiring Urology and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialities are generally referred to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
