The following is a list of most expensive association football transfers, which details the highest transfer fees ever paid for players as of the end of the summer transfer window of 2016.

The list contains eight transfers which broke the world transfer record: those of Paul Pogba, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo, Hernán Crespo and Christian Vieri, with Pogba signing for an English club, the next five signing for Spanish clubs and the latter two signing for Italian clubs. Two of the listed players became the most expensive teenagers in history upon their transfer: Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial; both signed for English club Manchester United. Two players appear on the list twice, James Rodríguez and Ángel Di María.

English team Manchester United hold the record for purchasing the most expensive player after signing Paul Pogba from Juventus in August 2016, paying £89.3 million for his services.

Highest fees

Most of the highest-value transfers on this list are to clubs under UEFA's jurisdiction, and most involve clubs in the Eurozone and/or the United Kingdom. The default order in this table is based on the transfer amount in euros. Due to exchange rate fluctuations the order is different in pound sterling, which are also shown in the table. Transfers that took place before the adoption of the euro are given in their approximate euro equivalent. The list includes only the top 50 disclosed transfer fees that were in excess of €40 million (or equivalent value in other currencies) at the time of the transfer.

As of 1 September 2016; following the 2016 summer transfer window.

Notes

  1. Initial transfer fee for Ibrahimović is indeterminable. Ibrahimović signed a 5-year contract, for €46 million and the exchange of Eto'o (valued at €20 million) and loan of Alexander Hleb (with an option to buy for a €10 million fee), with a €250 million release clause, making Ibrahimović worth €66 million. However, the Hleb deal collapsed. Eventually Ibrahimović cost Barcelona €69.884 million (£59 million), which included other fees. As per the Inter book the fee was €69.5 million, but part of the Inter fee (about 4.5%) was redistributed to youth clubs as solidarity contribution (except Juventus). The figure of €66 million is the one most often cited for Ibrahimović alone.
  2. Kaká's transfer is considered to have been a world record at the time despite the fact that Zidane's transfer had still been higher in euro value, due to the early 2000s recession.
  3. Fee was to be paid over time with an initial £44 million, plus another £5 million in additional bonuses.
  4. Lazio broke the then-world transfer record by paying £35 million (£16 million upfront and transferred Matías Almeyda and Sérgio Conceição) to acquire Crespo. The total transfer fee later amounted to £40 million.
  5. Total transfer fee that Barcelona paid for Neymar has been a subject of debate as well as a lawsuit. For more details refer to "2013: Transfer of Neymar from Santos to Barcelona"
  6. Part of the fees was paid via the transfer of Jonathan Bachini to Parma for a total of €53 million.
  7. Manchester United paid £36 million up front for Martial, but his contract contains three bonus clauses worth £7.2 million each, taking the potential fee to £57.6 million. The clauses each relate to certain accomplishments being achieved in the next four years, including if Martial scores 25 goals during that span, racks up 25 caps for France or wins the Ballon d'Or before June 2019.
  8. An indeterminate size of the fee was paid via the transfer of Diego Simeone to Lazio that totaled €45 million.
  9. Estimated figure. The transfer fee has not been disclosed.
  10. The incentives were appended to the total transfer fee of €41 million.
