Juan Bautista Rondeau (1735–1813) was a French military, in service of the Spanish crown. He served during the Viceroyalty of Peru and Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata,[1] participating heroically in the defense of Buenos Aires, during the British invasions (1806-1807).[2]
Biography
Rondeau was born in La Rochelle, son of Pierre Rondeau and Catherine Bourgeois.[3] He was married to Lorenza Pereira and were parents of José Rondeau, Supreme Director of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata.[4]
In 1762, Rondeau joined as Corporal in the Batallon de Infanteria of Santa Fe, and later was promoted to Lieutenant, serving in Montevideo.[5] In 1784, was responsible for construction the houses of the inhabitants, in villa de la Concepción.[6]
In 1785, Rondeau was appointed by the Viceroy Juan José de Vértiz y Salcedo, to take over the government.[7] He served as political leader and Commandant of Minas, Uruguay until 1790.[8]
