Earls House Hospital is a hospital located in County Durham, England, and lies on a large site just north west of Durham city. It is now known as Lancaster Road Hospital. The hospital is run by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust who have over 20 hospitals and inpatient services.[1] It formerly served as the headquarters for the old County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS trust.

History

Earls House was formerly known as Earl's House Industrial School around 1894-1899 began as a vocational residential school for children with special academic needs.[2] The school closed in 1922. . By 1928, it became known as Earls House Sanatorium and remained a sanatorium until the 1960s when it became part of the Hospital [3] It is spread over a very spacious site. The original red brick sections of the hospital provide offices for County Durham Primary Care Trust. Many of the newer ‘villas’ that became used as the main housing for people with learning disabilities closed down in the 1990s when Care in the community was seen to be the only way to cut costs.

Earls House is now known as Appleton House

Redevelopment and renaming

In 2008 contracts were signed for construction to begin on the Earls House Hospital site for a new facility "...
