District courts, Chandigarh is the district and sessions court for the Union territory of Chandigarh,^[1] in India. It is situated at sector 43 in Chandigarh, the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. The sanctioned strength of this district and sessions court is 20 judges. As on 9 April 2011, there are 20 judges.

History

The court came into existence on 1 November 1966 ^[2] with the bifurcation of the states of Punjab and Haryana and creation of Chandigarh as a Union Territory. Shri Jasmer Singh was the first District & Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, and Shri Sohan Lal Verma was the Sub Judge First Class.
