Cal Newport

Calvin (Cal) Newport (born June 23, 1982) is an assistant professor in the department of computer science at Georgetown University and the author of five how-to books and a blog focused on academic and career success.[1]

Academic career

Newport completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College in 2004 and received a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2009 in computer science. He then spent two years as a post-doctoral associate at the MIT computer science department. In 2011, he joined Georgetown University as an assistant professor of computer science. He runs a student help blog known as Study Hacks where he writes about "how to perform productive, valuable and meaningful work in an increasingly distracted digital age"[2]. The blog also popularized the term "deep work," which refers to studying for focused chunks of time without distractions such as email and social media.

Books

How to Win at College (2005)

Newport's first book, How to Win at College, was published by Random House in 2005. This book provided general advice for getting the most out of one's college experience, including academics, extracurricular activities, and networking with friends.[3][4]

How to Become a Straight-A Student (2006)

Newport's second book, How to Become a Straight-A Student, was published by Random House in 2006. Unlike its predecessor, this book was narrowly focused on achieving academic success in college.

How to Be a High-School Superstar (2010)

Newport's third book, How to Be a High-School Superstar, was published by Random House in 2010. This book focused on explaining a "relaxed superstar" strategy to high school students that would allow them both to shine in college admissions and to have a less stressful high school life.

So Good They Can't Ignore You (2012)

Newport's fourth book, So Good They Can't Ignore You, was published by Grand Central Publishing, a division of the Hachette Book Group USA, in 2012.[5][6] In the book, Cal Newport argues that one should not adhere to the advice "follow your passion". Additionally, he makes the claim that career success is achieved through building rare and valuable skills.

Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (2016)

Newport's fifth book, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, was published by Grand Central Publishing on January 5, 2016.[7] The book was an Amazon Best Book of 2016 Pick in Business and Leadership, Wall Street Journal Bestseller, and a Business Book of the Week at 800-CEO-READ.[8]
