Barry J. Beck is an American Entrepreneur and Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Bluemercury and M-61 Laboratories.[1] Mr. Beck founded Bluemercury, the nation’s largest and fastest-growing luxury beauty retailer and spa in the country, with his wife Marla Malcolm Beck.[2] Bluemercury opened its first location in Georgetown, Washington, DC in 1999, and has since expanded to over 100 stores across the country.[3] The company was acquired by Macy’s [NYSE: M] in 2015 for $210 million in cash, and continues to grow.[4] The couple also founded M-61 Laboratories, makers of M-61 Skincare, a highly technical and natural skincare line, in 2012.[5] The line is sold in Bluemercury stores and was picked up by Home Shopping Network in February 2015.[6] Barry Beck was also the recipient of the 2016 Retail Innovator of the Year Award by Retail TouchPoints Magazine.[7]

Career

In 1999, Mr. Beck co-founded Bluemercury, a high-growth luxury beauty retail chain, e-commerce provider and cosmetics brand developer.[8] Mr. Beck oversees all aspects of Bluemercury’s operations and leads the company's strategic growth initiatives.[9] He developed the original store retail model after the acquisition and development of the first Bluemercury store.[10]

In 2012, Mr. Beck co-founded M-61 Laboratories, makers of M-61 Skincare, the first highly technical, natural cosmeceutical brand sold in Bluemercury stores.[11] In 2015, Barry Beck also co-founded Lune+Aster, a vitamin-packed, vegan-friendly cosmetics line sold in Bluemercury stores.[12]

Prior to Bluemercury, Mr. Beck received his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and participated in the founding of Tower Systems, Inc., now known as U.S. Maintenance, a building services company serving national retail chains, which was acquired by The Emcor Group [NYSE: EME], a Fortune 500 Company.[13]

Mr. Beck currently sits on the Trustee Council of Cornell University, the Advisory Council of Cornell University’s ILR School, and on the Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.[14]

Mr. Beck is often invited to share his entrepreneurship, branding and innovation expertise, and was a recipient of the 2016 Retail Innovator of the Year Award by Retail TouchPoints Magazine.[15]

He has appeared as a guest speaker for the Showcase on Great Consumer Brands at NASDAQ, the Future of Bricks-and-Mortar Retail at the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, and Mobile Payment and Omnichannel Retailing at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Mr. Beck was a keynote speaker at the 2015 Texas A&M University Retailing Summit and at the WWD Retail 20/20 Innovation Summit.[16][17] He has also spoken on the subject of entrepreneurship and innovation at Cornell University and at Columbia University's Lang Center for Entrepreneurship’s Distinguished Speaker Series.[18]

Personal life

Mr. Beck currently resides in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife and three children.[19]
