2022 European Championships

Not to be confused with European Games.

The European Championships is a new multi-sport event which brings together the existing European championships of some of the continent's leading sports every four years. The second edition will be staged sometime in the summer months of July - August, 2022. European Championships in these sports held outside this quadrennial framework (annually in the cases of Gymnastics, Rowing, Triathlon and Cycling, biennially in the case of Athletics and Aquatics) are unaffected.

Overview

Following the first edition of the European Championships in 2018, the existing senior European Championships of Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon will once again be brought together to showcase themselves on the European stage in the summer months (July - August) of 2022.

The Board members of the European Sports Federations of Athletics (European Athletics), Swimming (LEN), Cycling (UEC), Gymnastics (UEG), Rowing (FISA), Triathlon (ETU) and Golf (ET & LET) all committed in principle to participating in 2022 after preliminary discussions on the host venue selection process for future editions of the championships.[1]

This competition is not related to the European Games which are organised in the Olympic tradition by the European Olympic Committees.

2022 Host Selection Process

The host venue selection process for the 2022 edition of the multi-sport event commenced on the 15th September 2016.[2]

The first step in the bidding process for 2022 is the distribution of the official Bid Information Document to interested parties, with a preliminary questionnaire to be submitted by the end of 2016. The participating European Sports Federations will announce the 2022 hosts in November 2017.

The European Championships Board has expressed its preference for all events to be staged in one city or region in a window between late July and August 2022.
