The 2017 Asian Winter Games will be the 8th edition of the Asian Winter Games. They will be be hosted in Sapporo and Obihiro Japan. These Games were originally scheduled for 2018. However, in the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly in Singapore on July 3, 2009, the committee decided to move the Games to one year before the Winter Olympics moving forward.

Sapporo and Obihiro were named as the host cities on January 31, 2011, as the sole bidding cities. The hosting contract was signed by Tsunekazu Takeda, the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee.[2] It will be the third time that Sapporo will host the event and fourth time in Japan. Previously the city held the Games in 1986 and 1990. Before hosting the first Asian Winter Games, the city was also the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics.

Bid

On January 31, 2011, Sapporo was awarded the right to host the Games. The decision was announced at the OCA's general assembly during the 2011 Asian Winter Games in Astana, Kazakhstan.[2] The bid was announced by Mayor Fumio Ueda on January 15, 2011, with no other bidding city.[3] The total cost is expected to be ¥3.5 billion.[4]

The Games

Sports

64 events across 11 winter sport disciplines, are scheduled in the 2017 Asian Winter Games program. The three skating sports are figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. The five skiing sports are alpine, cross-country, freestyle, ski jumping, and snowboarding. The other three sports are biathlon, curling and ice hockey. The two bobsleigh disciplines of bobsleigh and skeleton, luge and nordic combined (all Olympic sports) are not scheduled to be held.[5]

Numbers in parentheses indicate the number of medal events contested in each sports discipline.

Participating nations

31 NOC's (including two invited NOC's) are expected to compete. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Vietnam are expected to make their debuts.[6] Afghanistan (did not submit entries by the deadline), Cambodia and Iraq (not members of the International Skating Union, and thus their appeal for participation was rejected), originally intended on competing but did not.
The numbers in parenthesis represents the number of participants qualified. In September 2016, it was announced athletes from Oceania were invited to compete.[7] Countries from Oceania are however listed separately as they are not deemed as official competitors, rather as invited guest athletes (and thus are not eligible for medals).[7]
