The 2016–17 Illinois State Redbirds men's basketball team represents Illinois State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Redbirds, led by fifth year head coach Dan Muller, play their home games at Redbird Arena in Normal, Illinois and are members of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Previous season

The Redbirds finished the 2015–16 season 18–14, 12–6 in Missouri Valley play to finish in a tie for second place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Tournament to Indiana State. Despite having 18 wins and a better than .500 record, they did not participate in a postseason tournament.

Preseason

The Redbirds were picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll.[1] MiKyle McIntoshand Paris Lee were selected to the All-MVC preseason team.[1]
